Petroleum Thermal EOR
Subsurface Heat Management
Course Outline
Subsurface Heat Management Workshop This three-day workshop offered by Integrated Sciences Group includes a comprehensive review of steamflood and cyclic steam processes, well completions and subsurface equipment, and reservoir heat management principles. This course also includes hands-on training in the use of ISG's ResHeat software to analyze data and evaluate subsurface heat management efficiency. Emphasis is given to practical methods and techniques that have been proven to be effective in improving the economic performance of actual steamflood and cyclic steam stimulation projects. |
Course Outline |
Days 1 & 2 Part 1 - Thermal EOR Fundamentals Part 1 covers steamflood and cyclic steam processes, well completions and subsurface equipment, and heat management principles.
Part 2 - Performance Monitoring Part 2 covers guidelines and procedures for developing both surface and subsurface monitoring programs. Surface monitoring is covered on the first day. Subsurface monitoring is covered on the second day.
Days 2 & 3 Part 3 - Performance Evaluation Part 3 covers data analysis and interpretation concepts that are important in assessing how effectively the reservoir is being heated. The ResHeat software program will be used throughout Part 3.
Part 4 - Performance Optimization As a steamflood or cyclic steam project matures, modifications or adjustments to the operating strategy are often necessary to ensure optimum economic performance. Part 4 covers the various operational adjustments, which include modifications to both surface and subsurface equipment, that can be implemented to achieve better steam utilization and improve oil production.
The final hour or two of the course will be used to review a heat management review case study for the Monarch 2F Steamflood project in the Midway Sunset Field, California.

Instructor |
Ms. Suzanne Castrup has over thirty-five years of experience in heavy oil recovery and is currently President of Integrated Sciences Group. Since joining Integrated Sciences Group, she has developed several measurement science and petroleum engineering courses and provided engineering consulting services for monitoring and optimizing heavy oil projects in California, Canada, South America and the Middle East. Prior to joining Integrated Sciences Group, Ms. Castrup was Technical Advisor for Thermally Enhanced Oil Recovery in Chevron’s Western Basins Group providing in-house consultation on all aspects of steamflood and cyclic steam project design, implementation and evaluation. She was also a Production/Reservoir Engineer, managing both cyclic steam stimulation and steamflood projects in several heavy oil properties in the San Joaquin Valley, and spent eleven years as a Research Engineer at Chevron Oil Field Research Center. She has published numerous technical papers and holds several patents relating to heavy oil recovery. She is a recipient of the 2007 SPE International Award for distinguished contributions to petroleum engineering projects, facilities and construction.
